how we do it

Discovery
The first stage of the process is called discovery. This is done by a senior consultant at Hemingway Corporation. We review documents that guide the organisation – these include, Business Plan, Strategy, Legislative requirements placed on the organisation and any other documents concerned with the delivery of the service. Once we have a clear idea of the needs of the organisation we look at the staffing structure and each job description competency profile and person specification. We interview a control group across the organisation and look at how they use their skills and competencies.

Programme Design Phase
In the programme design stage, we review course outlines for training programmes delivered within the organisation and assess what it actually required for each role within the organisation.

The out put from the programme design phase is a training plan against each job description. The training plan can be used for assessing what training is required for each person, what they already know, it is a useful tool for appraisals and succession planning.

Course Design Phase
This phase is concerned with making sure the courses needed are delivered in the most appropriate and effective way. Hemingway Corporation uses our own proven learning strategy which we have attached (Instructional Design) as a basis for assessing and creating courses. We take out the parts of programmes that are not needed, work with providers to create relevant exercises, and look at how the courses can be organised so that they can be delivered in a modular format or in a blended way.

The outputs of the course design phase are modular courses with more than one method of delivery and the course ware that accompanies them - usually deliverable electronically.

Logistics
This phase is concerned with the pre delivery administration and the creation of the schedule. The schedule is based on the organisation needs and the trainer’s capabilities. This allows us to make full use of each training day and to deliver the right modules. Learners may not always attend for a full day. Usually a two or three hour module is all that is required. In the logistics phase we find venues, plan time for learners to review pre course material or work through blended learning, arrange ‘clinic days’ where specific issues can be remedied.

Outputs are the schedules, post course assessment forms, sign in sheets, joining instructions, expectations setting documents and any other administration tools required.

Delivery
The delivery phase is the enactment of the above – it is usual for delivery to be on going once it starts. In the delivery phase we collect data about the courses and monitor post course capabilities to see that they are working as expected.

Evaluation and Review
This phase influences the next iteration of the programmes. All stakeholders are invited to comment and be part of the review phase. We use standard reports that map to our continual improvement processes.

Hemingway Corporation Limited is ISO9001 accredited and all the above procedures are covered in our quality manual. The Quality System also covers – Tendering, Supplier Management, Recruitment, Design, Development, Testing, Delivery, Post Delivery Review, Failure (to meet defined objectives), Corrective Actions and Complaints,

Value
Our method results in training that is relevant and effective. The learners will be more likely to attend training that is geared to fit round their schedule and that helps them to do their job more effectively.

Learners will not need to spend as much time training; however we do not find that this method results in less training being delivered. More people attend as training becomes more valuable and less time intensive.

Expectations
Hemingway Corporation believes that our methodology is a common sense approach to delivering training. Although this pre-work looks like a lot to do – in reality it takes less that one day per role within the organisation. We can do most of the work on our own but it is better if we work in partnership with the organisation’s own training officer. This means the pre-work gets done faster and allows for sustainability of the project when Hemingway Corporation hand it back to the organisation.

If this is not possible then we will need someone from the organisation to provide us with the job descriptions and other material and to review and approve our work as we generate it.
